'Build Your Own' platform packs

Stone platform face (PP04)
(240mm x 31mm)

A section of platform face, suitable for creating a stone built platform on O gauge / 7mm scale layouts. Each piece of platform face is produced in white cast resin from our own masters and moulds. Each piece features random stone blocks, roughly faced and dressed - much easier than scribing your own from modelling clay! The ends of each piece have interlocking sections to avoid obvious joint lines in the finished model.

Each piece of platform measures approx. 240mm long x 31mm high.

Platforms constructed in this way were typical of many rural stations where local stone was plentiful and function was more important than grand architecture. They are also characteristic of light railways and branch line halts.

These castings can also be very effective when used as a general retaining wall or dockside / canal wharf.

Pieces paint well with either acrylic or oil based paints. The examples in the photos were painted mid grey then dry brushed with lighter shades of brown and grey to bring out the detail

Matching ramps are available below.

Timber sleeper built platform face (PP02)
(240mm x 31mm)

Platform face, suitable for creating a timber sleeper built platform on O gauge / 7mm scale layouts.

Each piece of platform face is produced in white cast resin from our own masters and moulds. Each piece features individual sleepers with prototypical splits, bolt holes and chair marks, so characteristic of old used sleepers.

Each piece of platform measures approx. 240mm long x 31mm high.

Platforms constructed in this way were typical of many wayside halts and small rural stations where traffic was light and economy of construction was important. They are particularly characteristic of light railways and featured prominently in the Colonel Stephens group of lines. At larger stations sleeper built platforms could be seen forming goods loading bays, provender merchants facilities and cattle docks, as well as extensions to masonry and stone passenger platforms.

Platform surfaces were typically either ash/ earth or timber boards. A small ledge is cast into the back of each piece to facilitate fitting of the platform surface by the builder.

Pieces paint well with either acrylic or oil based paints. The examples in the photos were painted dark brown then dry brushed with lighter shades of brown and grey to bring out the detail

Matching ramps are available below.

Stone platform ramps to match platform face (PP03)
(115mm x 31mm)

These ramps have been designed to fit with the straight stone platform faces shown above, each piece interlocking with the next to avoid unsightly joint lines.

Each ramp measures approx. 115mm long x 31mm high. Supplied as a handed pair for each end of the platform..

Timber sleeper built platform ramps to match platform face (PP01)

Each ramp measures approx. 115mm long x 31mm high. Supplied as a handed pair for each end of the platform..

Timber Trestle Platform Kit (PP05)
(130mm x 60mm x 31mm)

This versatile kit can be used in a number of different ways on the layout. It would be ideal for creating a small coaling stage at a branch line engine shed, it could be used as a milk dock for loading churns in the station yard, or the basis for a cattle dock. Small goods sheds and provender stores were sometimes built on their own little timber platforms. Small wayside halts on branch lines and light railways could be constructed entirely like this.  Away from the station it could perhaps be a carriage cleaning platform or a stage for loco servicing.

This kit comprises 5 detailed cast resin pieces, created from my own masters and moulds. The kit assembles quickly with superglue or general purpose adhesive to form a platform with a footprint of 130mm x 60mm, height 31mm. The pieces feature the typical splits and bolt holes characteristic of second hand railway sleepers. The top sleeper deck also has imprints from chairs were previously fastened. Careful painting followed by dry brushing will help to bring out all the detail.

The photographs show the parts you will receive, plus a sample build unpainted, and then painted to illustrate how a finished model could look.

Multiple kits can be joined together to create a longer platform if necessary.

7mm Narrow Gauge Platform face pack - stone / slate platforms. O-16.5, 14mm On30 (PP06/PP07)

The parts have been created from my own moulds and masters. They are intended to portray stone or slate platform walls as might be found on many rural narrow gauge lines with small stations constructed from local materials.

The pack comprises one straight section and a pair of ramps. This gives a level platform surface of approx. 250mm, long enough for a pair of 4 wheel coaches, typical of a small wayside halt and ideal for compact layouts. Additional pieces for extending the platform are available under a separate listing. Please use the basket and request total from seller for combined postage.

The parts feature a fully embossed stone surface, offering a considerable time saving over scribing your own from modelling clay or similar. The interlocking sections have been carefully designed to reduce unsightly vertical joints in the stonework. The parts are also sufficiently flexible to allow gentle curves to be formed.

The finished platform is 16mm high from baseboard surface, all pieces are approx. 4mm wide. An individual straight section is 210mm long, ramps each 103mm long, requiring a total track length of 416mm for the pieces in this pack.

The photos show the three parts you will receive, later photos show the parts being used in the construction of a small diorama to illustrate how they could be used on a layout.

7mm Narrow Gauge Coaling Stage Kit O-16.5, 14mm On30 (PP08)

These parts are intended to portray a coaling stage / loco servicing platform as could have been found in many a narrow gauge shed yard. Constructed from second hand timbers, often redundant sleepers, these characterful structures were quick and cheap to build, making them ideal for many a cash-strapped railway.

The pack comprises 6 pieces and can be built in either left or right handed configuration to suit the layout.

Dimensions of built model. Platform height 18mm. Overall length including steps 95mm. Width 49mm. Height of retaining wall 52mm

The photos show the  part you will receive, plus a painted and weathered display model. Base scenery and coal are not included in the kit.

The display model was painted using enamel model paint for the base coats, dry brushed and weathered with acrylic paint to bring out the detail in the timbers.
